Thinking of planning an eco-friendly event? That’s amazing! With the world’s growing concern and awareness about the state of our ecosystem and ongoing climate change, more people are trying to go green and stop using items that are next to impossible to recycle.
Without a doubt – saving the environment is worth changing our habits when it comes to what we use daily.
But when it comes to celebrations, it seems as if going green is a challenge. How do you really go about creating an eco-friendly event? From invites and decoration, to cutlery and plates, here are some things to keep in mind when planning eco-friendly events.
When it comes to the core of your event, i.e. decoration, linens, napkins, glassware, tableware, and so on, it’s best to use reusables instead of recyclables.
The idea behind it is simple. Instead of a product that has been produced for one-time use
(no matter how eco-friendly it’s manufacturing or recycling), having something that’s actually made to endure multiple uses in a safe, sanitary way is a far better option.
If you’re thinking paper plates, let’s be real – they can’t really help you pull off a sophisticated vibe. So instead of disposable paper plates and one-time-use cups and cutlery, consider renting tableware that is both reusable and beautiful. You’ll get a pristine set of tableware that will help you create an elevated eco-friendly event experience.
Moving on, we have napkins. Instead of regular ones just use cloth napkins. By making this switch, you get both a glamorous and an eco-friendly event in an instant. Cloth napkins can be rented as well, and you’ll get them properly sanitized and ready to be placed at the table.
Alongside napkins, there are table linens. Available in a variety of styles, materials, and shapes, you’ll definitely find what you’re looking for. Most of them, just like napkins, are made from natural, organic materials, so that’s another point in the eco-friendly bracket!
As a good chunk of the event rentals industry is green-oriented, find a company that uses eco-friendly dishwashers, high-efficiency washing machines, and strives to go paperless. This is most common with those who have been in the industry longest, as they have the awareness and means to switch to better ways of operating.
Instead of the traditional way of sending invites, why not try e-invites instead? Even though guests can keep them to remember the good times they had at your event, using paper invites is not green at all.
Paper is damaging the environment in a number of ways, starting from its birth, when a tree is cut down to make it, ending with its harmful decomposition when tossed. This is especially true with fancy paper that is often dyed, has glitter added, and so on. It makes the whole cycle much more difficult.
If you really don’t like the idea of an e-invite, consider using recycled paper or some of the eco-friendly versions, like cotton or bamboo paper. It will really add to the eco-friendliness of your event, while still keeping its memorabilia purpose. What’s more, not many people are aware of such paper, so it might be a fun novelty for some of your guests!
If you end up using some recyclables as part of your event decoration – don’t worry. You can rent and station bins for recyclables at your event! You can get a bin for different types of recyclables like paper, cans, glass, etc.
Sort the recyclables after the party is over and have them taken to the appropriate facility to be processed. It’s the easiest way to ensure the waste ends up in the optimal place for the environment.
